Sir Ludwig Guttmann CBE FRS (1899-1980) is regarded as the founding father of the specialised treatment and care of those with Spinal Cord Injury. He founded the Paralympic Games. Sir Ludwig was the first director of the first specialist centre for the treatment of spinal cord injury at Stoke Mandeville. He was knighted in 1966. He was the subject of the BBC TV film “The Best of Men” broadcast in 2012.
The Journal “Paraplegia”
From 1963 to 1996 “Paraplegia” was the leading journal which was published on the subject of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). From 1997 the journal has been called “Spinal Cord”. SPIRIT arranged and paid for the digitization of all the volumes of “Paraplegia” and has made them fully available as part of its mission.
