Spinal injuries charity

SPIRIT is a charitable organisation dedicated to the advancement of the best standards of care and treatment for individuals with spinal cord injuries globally. The charity focuses on the education and training of medical and para-medical professionals in the treatment of spinal paralysis and spinal injuries. SPIRIT provides grants to organise and attend conferences on all aspects of care as well as enable doctors, therapists, nurses, managers and other health professionals to travel to Centres of excellence to learn or teach new skills.

The Charity also promotes research to establish evidence of added benefits from local or systemic interventions to improve outcomes. SPIRIT encourages the exchange of knowledge between basic scientists and clinicians and ensures the dissemination of new effective findings between the two groups.

-BELIEVES that so many skills and so much knowledge can be gained outside and beyond the formality of an academic setting.

-SUPPORTS strongly the need for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the speciality of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).

-SEEKS to enthuse individuals who specialise, or wish to specialise, in caring for people who have sustained SCI, to build on their knowledge and experience by learning from others in a practical setting.

-ENCOURAGES those who have valuable skills to pass on that knowledge to others in a context where they can see the skills practised.

-SEES no national boundaries to the benefits to be gained from learning in a real-world setting and supports individuals from a wide range of countries worldwide to come to the UK to learn.

-IDENTIFIES professionals skilled in the treatment and care of SCI and helps fund them to travel to countries throughout the world to share their knowledge and improve SCI care.

-PURSUES its mission in the belief that it makes a real difference to those who have sustained SCI.
