education, temperament and individual inclination towards work have to be taken into
consideration. Obviously, a spinal cord injury does not necessarily transform a previously
workshy individual into a first-rate conscientious worker. Furthermore, it does not neces
sarily follow that every paraplegic who has taken up pre-vocational training in a parti
cular subject will carry on with the same occupation when he returns home or is trans
ferred to a hostel or permanent settlement. Circumstances were sometimes found to be
unfavourable for carrying on with the same occupation, for which the patient was trained
at this Centre. However, from all experience gained in the many years, it can be con
cluded that early vocational training in hospital has proved invaluable in restoring
