here to experimental research on chemical inhibition of fibre regeneration and neuroma
formation in peripheral nerves of animals (Guttmann & Medawar, 1942). We found 10
per cent formalin solution as a most effective inhibitor, which confirmed my previous
clinical experiences gained in man. I used 5 per cent formalin during operation in two
patients with excessive para-articular ossification which could not be removed com
pletely to prevent further growth but no conclusions could be made from this experience.
Sedgwick Mead
et al.
(1963) studied the effect of intravenous administration of
diodium ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (disodium edetate), 50 mg/kg body weight
in three paraplegics with para-articular ossification. No clinical improvement was found
and the progression of the ossifications was not stopped.
