sensibility. Gradually, in due course, commensurate with the development of the new
pattern of postural sensibility, he will be able to sit with his arms raised and eyes closed
and keep his equilibrium (Guttmann, 1945, 1946, 19533, 1962, 1967). The lower the
transection of the cord the less time it will take to establish the new pattern of postural
control. On the other hand, spinal paraplegics suffering from additional labyrinthine
affliction will have greatest difficulty in regaining their postural equilibrium.
Further details of the reorientation of posture are discussed in the Chapter on
Physiotherapy.
