Second World War, I observed distinct responses of the cardiovascular system during
bladder distension, especially marked in complete transverse lesions above T5—i.e. above
the splanchnic outflow—which called for more detailed investigation. With my colleagues
of the Department of Physiology, Oxford University, Whitteridge, Gilliatt, Cunningham
and Wyndham and members of my medical staff, the cardiovascular changes as well as
the responses of the sudo- and pilomotor systems were systematically studied. Every
member of the team had one specific task, such as filling the bladder and registering
Beats/min.
