Meninges
The spinal cord is protected by three layers of covers: Dura mater, Arachnoidea and Pia.
The spinal dura mater is the continuation of the inner layer of the cerebral dura, the
outer layer of which ceases at the foramen magnum and is replaced by the periosteum
lining the vertebral canal. It is separated from the spinal dura mater by the extradural
space containing fat and a venous network. The dura also envelopes the spinal roots.
