FRACTURE-DISLOCATIONS WITH POSTERIOR DISPLACEMENT
Fig 653 is an example of fracture-dislocation of the ist lumbar vertebra with profound
posterior dislocation and fracture of the pedicle. The anterior part of the body is com
pressed and a large piece of its superior plate sheared off forward. This unstable fracture
became stabilized by postural reduction. The compressed body re-expanded, the chipped
off piece rejoined the body in its proper place and the fracture of the pedicle healed
(Fig. 65b). Neurological symptoms: complete flaccid paraplegia below TIO/II which did
not change following reduction.
Fig. 66 demonstrates a fracture-dislocation of the 4th lumbar vertebra in a man, aged
50, causing backward dislocation and rotation, fracture of the pedicle, destruction of the
3 -4 -55.
