may be diminished over the feet and back of the legs. On the other hand in complete
spastic lesions at that level there may be outbursts of spontaneous hyperhidrosis which
may be very troublesome to the patient (see chapter on Spasticity).
Autonomic borderzone reactions
Mention has already been made of hyperhidrosis developing above the level of complete
cord lesions. The exaggerated activity of sweat glands is particularly conspicuous in the
segments nearest the lesion and reveals itself by early onset of sweating and a band-like
form of hyperhidrosis. The hyperhidrosis may be associated with increased muscular
vasomotor and pilomotor responses, and these reflex responses are elicited by afferent
excitation as revealed clinically by a borderzone-hyperpathia.
