lower lumbar and sacral segments as shown in Fig. 4od of Si segment. This figure also
shows numerous demyelinated spinal roots with completely or partly thrombosed vessels.
The ascending demyelination of the posterior, lateral and anterior tracts is demonstrated
in
Cj
segment which showed the normal architecture of the cord divided into grey and
white substances and also the ascending degeneration in the nucleus gracilis as well as
demyelination in the marginal zones of the lateral and anterior tracts, intermingled with
vacuolization and fissure formation. There were also patches of demyelination in the
central grey.
As mentioned before, many vessels showed various stages of thrombosis with
thickening of their wall and hyaline degeneration. This was found in both large and small
vessels. From observation in man and experimental studies by various authors on the
effect of deep X-ray treatment, it can be assumed that the vascular changes seen in this
case were, if not completely, at least partly the results of the repeated X-ray therapy.
